After reading the presentation listed in the blog topic, please comment with your thoughts on the impact this new technology may have on society. Share your thoughts on such things as benefits or challenges perceived, note how the power structure in society might change, discuss ways this technology might be abused, or discuss who will win and lose as a result of this technology.
This makes me think of when teachers had us make things in science, such as a cell model out of jello. Students could also make planes with different wings to compare them to one another. Of course, who says we need to make bridges out of popsicle sticks? This would be an awesome tool to have in the classroom.
Good point about the benefit of students and teachers utilizing this technology for creating replicas. This seems especially useful for science and possibly medical students as well - not to mention students pursuing design and engineering. I'm curious how this technology will destabilize central manufacturing- when we all have one of these, will we no longer go to Walmart to buy a basketball?
I also did my show and tell on a 3D printer. I saw one working with a comedian I like who made a character for his new act. There is so much we could do with 3D printers. You are right with being able to create replicas to allow students to hold and interact with instead of just showing pictures.
Amanda, I think 3D printers were a very popular technology for this project - and rightly so! I have already seen a presentation about this technology, but the presentations were very different and actually made me think about different ideas. Your presentation mentioned the recycling program, which is a great idea and can be yet another topic of discussion with our students. One idea that came to me, which I can't stop thinking about, is the possibility of using something like this in an Engineering or design class. My brother is a Civil Engineer and he works on bridges and damns. He tells me about some of the projects they are doing at his work and also told me about projects he worked on throughout school. In the planning stages of a huge engineering project, it would be awesome to have an actual piece of equipment to show different ideas and possibly even test through the use of a mock up. I think it would be great to use in my social studies classes as well! There are thousands of artifacts that I would die to show my students and if they could hold something in their hand that looks like the original, they would remember that moment for the rest of their lives!
